About AJ
- What's your name and age?
AJ (Anguel) Boykov, 34
- How much weight did you lose, and over what period of time?
80 lbs over 8 months
- What was your highest weight, and what’s your current weight?
325lbs was my highest weight, and my current weight is 245lbs. I went from pants size 44 to 36.
The Beginning
- What motivated you to start your weight loss journey?
I have struggled with my weight my whole life, and I wanted to live longer for my family. I also had sleep apnea, which went away with the weight loss.
- Was there a specific moment or event that made you say, “I need to make a change”?
Having to sleep on the couch because of sleep apnea and not being able to play with my son.
- What were your biggest concerns or fears when you started?
That this would be like everything else, and nothing would work. I’ve dieted for years and have been lifting for years, but I was always chubby.
The Approach
- What methods did you use before trying a GLP1 weight loss injection (e.g., diet changes, exercise, therapy, surgery, etc.)?
I literally tried everything from phentermine, to intermittent fasting, to thermogenics. Nothing would help the hunger and need for sweets, but I feel like this reset my hormones and allowed me to be my best self.
- Did you follow a specific plan (like keto, intermittent fasting, Weight Watchers, etc.)?
I only ate when I felt absolutely hungry, but I do drink Smoothie King’s GLP-1 gladiator shakes, which are low sugar and high protein. I tried to get at least 250 grams of protein a day.
- What made you decide to try a GLP1 injection in the first place?
I had tried phentermine and saw the option. After doing some research and talking with my doctor, I learned that I was on the path to pre-diabetes and decided to try it.
Mindset & Habits
- How did you handle cravings or setbacks?
I kept increasing the dose until I got to a manageable level, but switching to TRP was much better than Ozempic. It really helped me get over my final plateau.
Challenges
- What was the hardest part of the journey?
The fact that it’s never over. I hit my goal, but now I see my own potential. The judgement from people about using the medicine and being told I’m cheating (while I’m working out 5 days a week and doing cardio daily) was also hard.
- How did you stay motivated when progress was slow or you hit a plateau?
I went up in dosage too quickly, so I never really got stuck except at 265lbs. At that point, I switched to TRP, and it got me over the hump. The progress in the gym, the clothes fitting better, and the complements really helped.
Results & Lifestyle Now
- How has your life changed since losing the weight—physically, mentally, emotionally?
I have gained a lot of confidence, and I’m more outgoing in my daily life. I am able to play with my kids and not be winded, and I don’t have to sleep on the couch because of my snoring.
- What are some things you can do now that you couldn’t before?
Feel comfortable in front of people, at the pool and just out in general. I feel comfortable in my skin, and the confidence in my journey has helped me be more outgoing.
- Have your relationships (with yourself or others) changed?
I’m much more outgoing and want to be more social. It’s given me confidence in several aspects of my life that I hadn’t had before.
Advice to Others
- What advice would you give someone just starting out on these weight loss injections?
Drink lots of water! Make sure you don’t forget to eat because you can get really cranky! Eat your protein if anything, and avoid carb rich foods as they will give you heartburn. BE CONSISTENT.
- What do you wish you had known at the beginning before starting them?
Not to rush the process. I went up in dosage too fast and had some miserable weeks with throwing up and nausea.
- How do you plan to maintain your progress moving forward?
I have a new goal of 225 lbs, and, once I hit it, I will find a maintenance dose or try to come off of it completely.
